This project envisioned a major contemporary art museum situated within the cavernous interior of a larger Arata Isozaki megastructure in Shanghai’s Pudong district. The scheme proposed a series of three glowing “rock” structures to house the three principal parts of the museum’s public program: contemporary art, traditional Chinese art, and an auditorium. With an 18m ceiling height and as many as three levels, these structures are literally buildings within a building, with independent steel structures. Internally each is quite different, housing either a variety of galleries of different proportions, a 250 seat auditorium, or in the case of traditional art, an entire Ming dynasty courtyard structure.
